IN CUBA Mr. Galdos was born in Havana, Cuba and traveled to the United States as a political exile with his parents and brother as part of one of the first Cuban families to arrive in Southern Florida shortly after the Soviet takeover of the island in 1960. Prior to that, he was educated at La Salle Preparatory School (Miramar/Vedado) in Havana. As a student there he was active in numerous civic, religious and charitable activities sponsored by his School and the Church. When it became apparent that Cuba was being occupied by the foreign Soviet-led communists he participated in and helped organize the early opposition to the communist dictatorship including a 1.5 million-strong mass meeting in Havana against the initial communist dictatorial decrees. Throughout his education years at La Salle he was actively involved in helping and teaching the less advantaged in and around Havana.
IN AMERICA - MIAMI The family initially settled in Miami Beach where he graduated from Saint Patrick’s High School. In Florida he produced radio broadcasts from Miami against the Soviet dictatorial regime in Cuba and founded the Cuban-American Students International Democratic Movement to help promote a return to democracy and freedom of the press in the island.
IN VENEZUELA & NEW YORK
Shortly thereafter, in order to continue pursuing his social and religious ideals, he applied and was admitted to the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) studying and training as a Jesuit for seven years. He traveled to Venezuela for that purpose and later was assigned to Fordham University in New York, where he studied philosophy as a Jesuit.
